Musical Scores
In the music set department we hold many copies of vocal scores for lending
to societies, churches, schools, choirs and music groups throughout Berkshire.
A vocal set may contain both vocal scores and chorus editions, a copy of our
current catalogue is available upon request.
We do not stock orchestral sets but are able to obtain these from other
libraries which will incur a reservation fee and a hire fee if the borrowing
group live outside the Reading area.
How To Borrow
A representative from your group must complete a registration form accepting
responsibility for all library sets the group borrows. Student groups should
ask the college librarian or a member of the academic staff to apply on their
behalf. The library should be notified if the society changes its name or
representative.
Requests
Music sets must be booked well in advance of the date required to avoid
disappointment. In particular borrowers are strongly advised to reserve
seasonal and popular titles at least 3 months in advance and festival or
centenary music at least 6 months in advance.
When placing a request please advise us of the following:
- Your full name and contact details
- The composer and title of the piece you want
- The language of the singing text
- The publisher, if you want to specify a particular edition of the piece
- The date you want the loan to start
- The date of the performance and the date you will return the set to us.
This information may be posted to us, emailed or by telephone on 0118
901 5944 (answerphone service).
If the music requested is not held by us, we will endeavour to obtain it
from another library, this service incurs a reservation charge, details of
which will be given at the time of the request.
Music groups not based in Reading will have to pay a monthly hire charge
for their music, details of this will also be given at the time of the request.
Overdue charges are payable on sets and borrowers are expected to replace
lost or severely damaged copies in the same edition normally within one month
of the return date, these will incur a binding charge if replaced by paperback.
For information on current prices please see the Using the
Library page.
The principle aim of the vocal set collection is to support music making,
both amateur and professional, by providing appropriate performance materials.
It is therefore a condition of the loan that societies make an acknowledgement
of the sponsorship provided by the library in any programme that is produced.
A suggested form of words is:
We acknowledge the support of Reading Borough Libraries who provided the
music for tonight’s performance.
We can supply a copy of our logo to include in your programme.
Drama Sets
Drama sets are available for loan to any group or school registered with
Reading Library. Each group is issued with one library card, which is kept
at the library. If you wish, we can specify one person as the ‘Named user’
of that card i.e. the only user of that card on behalf of the group, or else
we can give you an ‘Open’ card which allows anyone in the group to use it.
If you are the contact please -
- Inform us of any change of name, address or phone number
- Be aware of all plays issued to the group
- Ensure the safe return of all loans
Borrowing Sets
Drama groups may borrow up to ten sets for twelve weeks. Renewals by phone
may be possible. Groups can also borrow drama books but not scores, music
books or Audio-visual stock of any kind.
If any group continually returns loans late or damaged the Librarian
reserves the right to suspend membership. No loans will be made to any group
with fines or stock outstanding.
Overdue Items
Overdues are charged at the same rate as an overdue book, by the day, so it
is in your interests to return loans promptly.
Loan charges
Any group/school which is not based in Reading Borough has to pay to use the
Drama Sets Service. Items issued are charged at £5.00 per title which is
issued for twelve weeks.
