Reading Libraries hold a wide range of current
national newspapers and local newspapers, and keeps back copies of most of them
in the Central Library. Our wide range of magazines can entertain, inform or educate
covering areas from Accountancy and Archaeology to What's On, Wildlife and
Woodworking. We also take some
newspapers and magazines from overseas.
We have online access to the Times Digital Archive, which has
facsimile copies of back copies of the Times from 1785 to 1985
as well as NewsUK
for more current newspaper and magazine coverage.
Historical Newspapers
The Local Studies section keeps many publications of local interest and keeps
backfiles of local newspapers on microfilm
back to the 18th century.
For older national newspapers we have the Times on microfilm going back to 1884,
with the Times Index (printed) back to 1883 and the Financial Times Index (printed)
back to 1981 with microfilms. We also have microfilms of the various Times supplements.
Magazines
The Central Library holds the current editions of over 400
magazines & periodicals. For most of these titles we also hold
past editions, keeping them for varying amounts of time -
anything from the last few issues to over a hundred years
worth. The majority are kept for between 6 months and 2 years.
We also hold magazines and newspapers in our branches.
